Consulting A Lawyer After An Injury
How soon after my injury should I consult a personal injury lawyer?
I got a phone call from a lady yesterday who got hurt about nine months ago. She was a very anti injury lawyer, didn't want to call one, just felt like she didn't want to make a big deal, didn't want to make a big fuss. She even delayed getting medical care because she didn't want to make a big deal about it.
Because she didn't consult a lawyer, she did almost everything wrong. She couldn't find a doctor, the doctor she did find charged her cash out of her pocket while she was out of work with injuries. So imagine that you're under stress after a car crash, your car's damaged, the other person's insurance company is jerking you around about the repairs, your neck and back are killing you, and you don't have money coming in.
This lady took out a loan on her home in order to go to the doctor. So then every visit and every time she went to the doctor she was like nervous to spend the money. Her money's running out and the insurance company won't explain things to her and won't help her. The tragedy is, she had health insurance and her doctor told her no.

Use Your Health Insurance
Reader's Digest is, if you have health insurance and you haven't talked to a lawyer yet and you have no other means to pay for medical care, use your health insurance. Better yet, find a doctor who will work on a lien and wait until the end of your injury case to get paid. But this is the kind of advice that I can give in these articles. But that you're not going to really put two and two together and realize something like "okay that applies to me, I need to find a different doctor".
Maybe it's intimidating and weird to talk that way to a doctor. In fact you don't even talk to the doctor. You're probably going to talk to whatever person is sitting at the front desk and they have their marching orders and they have their office policy so there might be no way to get around it.

My point is, there are a million little pitfalls and mistakes you can make after an injury that increases your stress and reduces the value of your case. Some of them can even mean the difference between winning and losing your case. Which is why I tell everybody quick hit today. If you got hurt, get a free consultation whether it's from me or whether it's someone else. I mean most of my cases are in Chicago but if you are outside of Illinois I do cases all over Illinois and I do cases all over the country.
