Nursing Home Negligence and Abuse: The Four Steps To Pick A Good And Safe Place For You or Your Loved One.

We talk a lot about nursing home negligence and abuse at the Law Office of Scott D. DeSalvo. But if you’re in Illinois and you’d like to avoid needing a Chicago nursing home attorney, you want to focus on prevention. The most important step in the prevention of abuse is in making your choice of nursing homes.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services provides a publication on choosing a nursing home. It provides information on paying for nursing home care and your rights as a resident.

The guide identifies four steps to take when identifying the nursing home of your choice.

1. Find homes in your area

You can visit Nursing Home Compare, enter your zip code, and you’ll get a list of results in your area. Another great way to get started in your search is to contact a long-term care Ombudsman. You can find listings by county for Ombudsman agencies throughout the State of Illinois on the web.

An Ombudsman is an independent government official who advocates for nursing home residents. They can help you start your search by providing info on nursing homes in your area.

2. Compare

Medicaid’s guide on choosing nursing homes identifies a few characteristics on which to compare nursing homes.

  • Quality of life and care: is the care provided sufficient for your needs?
  • Location: is it close to your loved ones so visits will be convenient?
  • Availability and Staffing: is there a bed available and sufficient staffing?
  • Resident & Family Satisfaction: are existing residents and families satisfied?
3. Schedule visits

Scheduling an in-person visit or having someone else go visit for you is important. A visit will allow you to better evaluate the home than if you relied on pictures or descriptions alone.

4. Choose the nursing home

Once you’ve gathered as much information as you can about various nursing home options, take some time to review it. The Medicaid guide provides a checklist you can print and use to evaluate your options.

When you do choose your new home, make sure the staff has all your pertinent information. This includes insurance info, medical history, and advance directives.
