(The Answer Can Mean Making or Losing Money)
I was talking to a guy last week and he said that he would talk to five or six lawyers to make a decision based on who he liked best during the conversation. He said he wanted to cover all his bases and see what they would say about the case then said that it does not really matter as all injury lawyers are the same. They do whatever, paid the same amount from insurance companies.
All Injury Lawyers Are Not The Same
First thing I want to tell you is that not all injury lawyers are the same. There are major advertisers in the Chicago market and based on my friends who are lawyers out of the state, there are major advertisers in every state and person on the billboard or the TV screen. Or the yellow pages from years ago where lawyers are the face of the organization but it is very unlikely to talk to them and unlikely to know who you are. Or the yellow pages from years ago where lawyers are the face of the organization but it is very unlikely to talk to them and unlikely to know who you are.
The way business in law works for most people is they sign up for cases and will not work on any themselves. They sign up then refer them or have attorneys under them who would do the work. In any case that you like the attorney on TV, it is very unlikely that they will know who you are and talk to you. That is the first thing, just because a big spender is everywhere on the internet that does not mean they will work on your case.
In the state of Illinois and in most states, any lawyer can do any legal work. The other thing I wanted to let you know is not all lawyers are the same. For example, an attorney finished law school focused on real estate then practices real estate closings, and the minute they hear about an injury case they can say that they are qualified to do injury cases. They would sign up to the case and do some effort to settle the case then refer it to somebody else who does injury cases.
It is ethical for lawyers to sign up for any kind of case. I want to tell you how we do things differently. First, we only do injuries; car crashes, nursing home abuse, fall down cases, dog bite cases, medical malpractices. The common element in the cases we focus on is just injury. You will not see me at a real estate closing, criminal court, traffic court, nor negotiating a contract because the time I became a lawyer I focused on helping injured people.

Law Specialization
My advice to young lawyers is to decide what you want to do. You can spend a few years early in your career figuring out what you enjoy doing and after you should focus on becoming a specialist in law to become a better lawyer. In order to have great results, you have to be great in the field. That addresses how the gentlemen generalizes all lawyers.
In my office, we signed a case. We did a ton of investigation early on all my cases, get a medical summary then we would write the longest detailed demand letters in business. I worked in several law firms and am friends with many lawyers, I am familiar with that other lawyers send out as a demand letter to get an offer from the insurance company.
I devised my own format only after I became a lawyer. We got better and quicker offers than using a typical demand letter. We caught several additional treatments and medical treaters that we would have missed because our client did not tell us which obviously adds value to our case.
Our Firm Values People
The last thing that can differ my firm from others is that we value people. As you have seen as I got busier, I need my employees which brings me to my next point. Always be nice to people.
You have to return their calls. The number one complaint about lawyers is that they do not keep their clients informed. They do not return their calls. In my office it is a priority to keep in touch with the clients. In any case that you do look for a lawyer, find someone who actually talks to you. A lawyer that will communicate and an honest one at that.
Lastly, find someone that you can be comfortable with. If I ever wanted a lawyer, I want to vibe with you so we can communicate easily. I do not want someone who acts like a big star. As much as lawyers think that they are reinventing every injury case, it is not always that. Everything is explainable and if you got a lawyer who cannot, they are not doing their job. I hope this information helps.
